In this episode of Pep in the Bush, I explore the forgotten ghost town on Mariepskop Mountain in Hoedspruit, South Africa. This abandoned military radar base and village, built in the 1960s and deserted since 2003, sits high above the Lowveld, sometimes hidden in the clouds.
Walking through the abandoned streets, visiting homes where families once lived, and seeing the haunting remains of the radar base. A former resident even guides me through her own abandoned house, giving a rare glimpse into life in this mountain ghost town.
Along the way, we take in the breathtaking views of Mariepskop, the surrounding Blyde River Canyon, and the wild, untouched nature of the northern Drakensberg mountains. From rough 4x4 roads to the high mountain peaks, this adventure shows the beauty and mystery of South Africa’s hidden locations.
