Fort Wadsworth (1807-1994) is a former US military installation, situated on Staten Island in New York. The fort was built as a fortification point to protect the Upper Bay and Manhattan beyond. Prior to closing in 1994 it claimed to be the longest continually garrisoned military base in the United States. It includes plenty of fortifications, mostly reinforced concrete batteries and bunkers armed with large-caliber artillery.

During its history the fort continuously had been fortified. After WWII it comprised more than a dozen active and abandoned batteries with bunkers. I prepared a list of them and guns they were armed with:

Gun battery Duane (1897 - 1915): five 8-inch counterweight disappearing guns.
Battery Ayres (ex Miramar Battery) (1901 - 1942: two 12-inch guns.
Battery Richmond (1899 - 1942): two 12-inch guns.
Battery Barry (ex Clifton) (1899 - 1918): two 10-inch.
Glacis Mortar Battery (built 1871 – 1873) was never armed.
Battery Upton (ex Ravenna Battery) (1899 - 1925): two 10-inch.
Battery Morton was built in 1811.
Fort Tompkins (built 1871 – 1873), never armed. Don’t know why.
Battery Dix (1902 - 1944) has a huge bunker: two 12-inch.
Battery Mills (1900 - 1943): two 6-inch.
Battery Hudson (1899 - 1944): two 12-inch , one 6-inch, one-4.7 inch.
Battery Barbour (1898 - 1920) has a bunker: two-6 inch guns, two-4.7 inch rapid fire guns.
Battery Turnbull (AMTB 14) (1903 - 1945): six 3-inch.
Battery Bacon (1899 - 1918): two 3-inch.
Battery Catlin (1904 - 1942): six 3-inch
Battery 218 was transferred for use in 1944. Abandoned in 1958. Was armed with 6 inch coastal gun.

Over seven of existing batteries are scattered across the facility, all in various states of desolation.

A part of fortification was destroyed in the early 1960's for the Verrazano Narrows Bridge erecting. A part was torn down or buried. However, many abandoned bunkers, magazines and old gun platforms still exist. Should mention that doors and gates of some undergrounds are covered with ground and those bunkers stay sealed since WW2. Who knows what secrets are kept there.

Today I planned to take a long walk in forest of NJ, but cold weather changed my itinerary and I decided to explore an abandoned military base and bunkers in New York City.

Use headphones for better experience.
